Project Overview

Facility: Sam Rodgers Propeller Building

Owner: Brinshore

Location: Kansas City, MO

General contractor: Straub Construction

Services: Gypsum underlayment

Project Summary

The Sam Rodgers Place Apartment and Townhomes constructed a new community space called the Propeller Building, operated by the Samuel U. Rodgers Health Center and designed to serve as a hub for small businesses, non-profits, and other community groups. The building includes an event space, kitchen, business center, and conference rooms. Outdoor amenities include a rain garden, pedestrian bridge, and community playground.

The Problem

This new construction project had a total square footage of 4,077. The builder needed a higher psi underlayment that would support the heavy traffic, as well as meet its part of the 1-hour fire rating required on most wood-framed construction. The Nettles team joined the project to pour gypsum (also called gypcrete or cementitious underlayment).

The Nettles Solution

Nettles mix design experts modified the gyp mix to achieve the required 3500 psi and poured a 3/4″ layer of underlayment throughout the 4,000+ square foot building. The entire project took the Nettles team less than four hours to complete, allowing other contractors to stay on schedule and the construction to proceed smoothly. The finished assembly achieved the required 1-hour fire rating.

"This project went smoothly and it was exciting to work on an important community space like the Propeller building."
