Project Overview

The WestPro Construction Solutions team, in conjunction with BSA LifeStructures, the architectural firm, and McCown Gordon, the general contractor, installed a lightweight insulating concrete (LWIC) roof deck system in the recently constructed Children’s Research Center at Children’s Mercy Hospital in Kansas City, Missouri. The project was completed in the 1st Q of 2020.

The Problem

Children’s Mercy Hospital, a premier facility and highly respected research hospital for children, recently expanded the downtown KC campus by adding a nine-story, state-of-the-art research building. The new construction required a roof deck system that had a high R-value and was durable, low-maintenance, and cost-effective.

In addition, they needed a subcontractor they could trust to do the job on schedule with high quality.

The Nettles Solution

Nettles Construction worked with the team at BSA LifeStructures to determine the optimal roof type for this high-profile project. Mark Van Doren of Nettles Construction worked with Jackie Foy and her team at BSA LifeStructures for over two years to bring this project to life.

The architects and designers need a roof system with a high R-value that would also deal with the requirements of the fire rating, water drainage, and the slope-to-drain ratio. In addition, the roof deck needs to require little maintenance and have a low Total Cost of Ownership (TCO).

The architect and owner decided that a Lightweight Insulated Concrete (LWIC) roof deck system would be the best fit for this project.

The LWIC roof deck met all of the roof requirements and did so more economically than traditional roofing methods. A LWIC roof deck offers many advantages: for instance, it is batched on site and can be pumped to fit exact spaces. It also offers great R-values and is long-lasting. Tapered polyiso was used for the insulation, as the roof is fairly flat and with a low slope; this also allowed for a higher fire rating.

The Nettles team installed a lightweight insulating concrete (LWIC) roof deck system on the newly constructed wing of Children’s Mercy Hospital during the 4th Quarter of 2019. LWIC met all of the project’s requirements and provided the most durable option for the roof.

McCownGordon and WestPro Construction have worked together on many projects throughout the Midwest. As a result, McCownGordon knows first-hand WestPro’s level of professionalism, skill, and knowledge. McCownGordon also knows that WestPro is the industry leader in LWIC work and installation.

The project was completed on time, despite some delays caused by windy weather and snow. It was a well-coordinated event that contributed to a distinctive and highly valuable addition to the Children’s Mercy campus.
