Project Overview
Nettles Construction Solutions was instrumental in the construction of an intricate and unique building. Folding Light, scheduled to open in January 2020, will be the newest addition to the Oklahoma Contemporary Arts Campus. It presented several challenges which Nettles was able to solve with the use of a Lightweight Insulated Concrete (LWIC) roof system.

The Problem
One of the challenges presented by the Folding Light Project was its unique roof design, which is unusually shaped and avoids straight lines and right angles and which naturally required meticulous roofing work. Specifically, the shape of the roof’s design required a flat roof that had to be tapered precisely to allow correct water drainage.
The Nettles Solution
Nettles solved this challenge by using Lightweight Insulating Concrete (LWIC), which has several distinct advantages over traditional roof insulation systems: it is poured into place so it will completely fill in every corner and angle. LWIC is a very durable material and is used with longevity in mind, a real value in considering this high-profile art museum building. In these situations, Nettles’ solution of using LWIC is the best and most cost-effective roofing option.
Another advantage of LWIC is soundproofing. By filling in every gap, LWIC completely encases the entire roof of the building. This system makes the building very quiet inside, which is perfect for a building that will sponsor many different kinds of art.
The successful installation of the LWIC roof system on Folding Light presents a true achievement: 16,000 square feet of lightweight insulated concrete contoured to provide a very distinctive design. This gorgeous and unique building will be a significant part of the Visual Arts Coalition in Oklahoma City when it opens in January 2020.
