Gymnasiums, schools, auditoriums, restaurants, and other noisy commercial spaces require effective sound insulation for their roof or floor decks. Nettles is a leading subcontractor and installer of acoustic spray insulation in the Kansas City and Texas regions. In this buyer’s guide, our experts explain how acoustic spray works and why GCs should specify it.
What is acoustical spray?
Acoustic spray is a spray-applied material designed to meet specific thermal and acoustical requirements. At Nettles, we primarily install Isolatek’s CAFCO CELLU-SHIELD, a cellulose material ideally suited for light gauge steel panels, concrete slab construction, the underside of roof decks, or applications where a high noise reduction coefficient (NRC) is required.
How is acoustical spray applied?
Similar to cementitious fireproofing, we install acoustical spray via a mixer and pump. We batch the material onsite, and spray multiple layers depending on the R-value and NRC needed. If you’re installing both acoustical spray and fireproofing, the fireproofing should be sprayed first, with the acoustic insulation going over it.
Since the material cannot be sprayed as quickly, acoustic spray takes about twice as long to install as cementitious fireproofing.
What are common applications of acoustical spray?
We install acoustical spray insulation in restaurants, gymnasiums, schools, theaters, parking garages, and other locations that require both noise insulation and, in some cases, thermal insulation.
What NRC can acoustical spray achieve?
The NRC depends on the thickness of the spray. CELLU-SHIELD has been tested to achieve an NRC of up to 1.05.
What R-value can acoustical spray achieve?
Similarly, the R-value will depend on how thick the spray is applied. CELLU-SHIELD has been tested to achieve R-values of 3.90 per inch.
How will acoustic spray insulation look on my building?
Some think that acoustic spray blends right into the structure. In reality, once applied, acoustical spray looks like hardened foam. However, we offer CELLU-SHIELD in a variety of colors, including black, tan, and gray, to make it less noticeable in your space.
How long does acoustic spray last?
Your insulation should last the lifetime of building occupancy, unless it gets knocked off during remodeling. In those cases, we have a patching crew that can re-apply the insulation to small areas.
What factors influence the cost of acoustic spray?
There are a variety of factors that influence the price, including:
- Volume of spray required: More material is needed for higher R-values, higher NRCs, and larger areas.
- Color of spray
- Building occupancy: If the space is finished and/or furnished, protective coverings for furniture are required.
- High-Build: High-Build acoustic spray insulation is over three inches thick, and requires installing tacks and metal lath in the ceiling before spraying.
How can I save money on acoustic spray?
Consider bundling acoustical spray with fireproofing, since the same team of subcontractors can install both. This reduces both cost and scheduling hassles, increasing the likelihood of timely completion of your project.
Are there alternative noise insulation solutions?
Yes–Tectum roof deck systems also help with noise reduction. However, acoustic spray tends to be among the most cost-effective options for sound reduction.
